Energy Diagnostics
RESNET Market Transformation Award
Energy Diagnostics, Inc. is a small rating firm located in
Valparaiso, Indiana and has clients in Indiana, the greater Chicago
area, Michigan, and Ohio. Energy Diagnostics has been rating homes since
January of 1992 and has performed individual home energy ratings on over
8000 homes during this span of time. (Total ENERGY STAR homes rated,
7500 and tax credit homes for 2006, 826 and total ENERGY STAR homes for
2006, 1524). There have been no subsidies for ENERGY STAR nor home
energy ratings available in this market.
Energy Diagnostic’s goal was to transform the Allen County
marketplace to ENERGY STAR compliant homes. Starting in January of 2006,
they began marketing to the Allen County area. They joined the Allen
County Home Builder’s Association and began scheduling sales meetings
with builders throughout Allen County which includes the city of Fort
Wayne. Prior to their efforts there was zero market penetration. At the
end of 2006, they had captured 39% of the market as ENERGY STAR
representing 16 builders building 413 homes of which 369 were tax credit
compliant. Every home plan that was analyzed required some upgrade to
obtain ENERGY STAR and/or the tax credit. Improvements included LOE
windows, foundation insulation, high efficiency equipment, improved air
tightness of the envelope and duct sealing. Throughout the year they
retained 97% of all new clients. Fifty percent of the builders report
that they we will continue the ENERGY STAR program if the tax credit is
no longer involved.

Architectural Energy Corporation
RESNET
Industry Innovation Award
Over the past twenty-five years Architectural Energy Corporation has
provided important program leadership to the HERS® industry through its
participation in the development of uniform standards, formation of HERS
industry organizations, technical and advisory help to HERS Providers
and Raters, and continuous development of the REM/Rate home energy
rating software.
Architectural Energy Corporation, or key staff, has been “at the
table” contributing to the development of a HERS industry since the
notion of home energy ratings was defined in the 1970’s. Michael Holtz,
FAIA, President of Architectural Energy Corporation, and former head of
the Solar Energy Research Institute’s building energy research program,
participated with the U.S. League of Saving Associations in the late
1970’s to create the first guidelines for home energy ratings. He
continued his involvement with the Regional Solar Energy Centers to
develop the concept of a home energy rating program in the late 1970’s
and early 1980’s, and was instrumental in developing the DOE/HUD
Collaborative Council for Home Energy Ratings, out of which the HERS
Council was formed and eventually RESNET.
Architectural Energy Corporation staff has been actively engaged in
all aspects of the development of the home energy rating industry, and
has been a powerful voice in the development of technical standards
which define a uniform home energy rating process and benchmark.
