Legislation Introduced in Congress to Extend and Amend Energy Tax
Incentives
Legislation to extend and amend the federal tax incentives for energy
efficiency has been introduced in Congress. Both bills drew an
impressive bipartisan list of co-sponsors. In terms of building energy
performance the House and Senate bill is essentially the same as was
contained in last year's Snowe-Feinstein legislation. it extends the new
homes credit through 2010, establishes a performance based credit for
existing homes, and amends the commercial buildings incentive.
In the Senate Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Diane Feinstein (D-CA)
introduced S 822. The bill is co-sponsored by John Kerry (D-MA), Jim
Bunning (R-KY), Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Norm Coleman (R-MN), Ken Salazar
(D-CO), Gordon Smith (D-OR), Wayne Allard (R-CO) and John Cornyn (R-TX).
In the House Representative Jim McDermott (R-WA) introduced the House
companion bill, HR 1385. The bill is cosponsored by Ed Markey (D-MA) and
Jerry Weller (R-IL).
The bill is backed by an dynamic diversity of organizations including

Economy, Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International,
The Dow Chemical Company, DuPont, Exelon, Edison Electric Institute,
